You have a right to this information.
Every council in the country is required by law to keep a register of the houses in multiple occupation it licenses, and to make it available to the public. Most of them do — scattered across 361 websites, in whatever format each one chose, and some only if you turn up in person during office hours.
A right you cannot exercise is not much of a right. So where a register is not published, we ask for it under the Freedom of Information Act, and we publish the asking: which council, what we asked for, when, and what came back. You should not have to take our word for what a council does or does not release.

Requests are drafted before they are sent, and appear here once they go out.
We ask only for the address, licence reference, dates and scheme, and we explicitly decline the names and home addresses of any licence holder who is an individual. Where a council sends those anyway, they are not published here and never reach the map.
